Friday 10 April 2026. oceanman_maldives made history this morning by successfully hosting the first and largest international sport event in the Maldives. The event kicked off early morning at Maafushi “Islaahiyyaa Beach” to the sound of local Bodu Beru. The sun rose on yet another beautiful day to swim in the Maldives.

This is also the first time the Oceanman franchise (2015 Spain) has hosted their signature event in the Maldives.

532 registrations

oceanman_maldives was open to 6 categories. The 10K attracted 46 swimmers, while the 5K attracted significantly more at 143 swimmers. The 2K seemed to be the most popular with 181 swimmers.

There were also a fins, kids and team’s category The Fins category is a 2K swim with 20 swimmers and the Oceankids category is 500m and attracting 73 swimmers. Oceanteams attracted 69 swimmers in 23 teams for a 3 × 500m relay.

International & local

While the event attracted 532 participants, 147 were Maldivians while 385 were international from 40 different countries. For a country with more sea than land, local share at 38% is an encouraging start.

The 2K this morning.

In the opening statement, the host, Swim Maldives President Hussain Shameem welcomed everyone to have a good time at the event. The Oceanman Director followed up by highlighting the inclusive nature of the event. While the event attracted top open water competitors, the space for the amateurs appeared well accommodated with a range of categories from kids to participants in their seventies.

Swimming for fitness.

In an age where physical fitness is the antidote for sedentary lifestyle, swimming is an activity one would imagine is within easy reach of Maldivians. This is however not so despite the fact the Maldives is more sea than land. One could even call the Maldives a natural water sports stadium.

With almost 40% of the population concentrated in Male’ city, there is a lack of safe and appropriate spaces for swimming. A few swimming tracks in the reefs around Male’ a 25m indoor pool with an Olympic pool under construction in Hulumale’ hardly cater for an inclusive swimming culture.

A lack of regular physical activity has led to an explosion of noncommunicable diseases including obesity (fat), heart disease (cardiovascular) and age-related muscle and bone loss (osteoporosis & sarcopenia). Physical activity has become a necessity rather than a choice.

A national sport.

In a country with more sea than land, swimming could become our national sport of the future. The 2004 Tsunami highlighted these issues. Swimming is a must for all Maldivians. Aquatics as an elective included in the National Certificate in Fitness offered in the Maldives by the Male’ Fitness Academy.

We come across occasional online news articles written by journalists who are surprised at the number of Maldivians who can swim! The oceanman_maldives event will go a long way in creating awareness of the untapped potential of swimming in the Maldives, domestic or international sports tourism.
